The exhibition
Aegyptus – From the Nile to the Mediterranean. Oases and deserts in the Roman Era will be hosted inside Museo Nazionale Romano until November 15, 2026. This innovative project unveils a fascinating and lesser-known chapter of antiquity: the life and presence of Romans in the oases of the Western Egyptian Desert between the 1st century BC and the 5th century AD.
Promoted by the Italian Ministry of Culture, “Aegyptus” is far more than a traditional display—it is a fully immersive, cross-media installation. The exhibition path seamlessly merges scientific research with modern technology, transforming your visit into a unique sensory journey.
Thanks to a dynamic mix of video art, digital reconstructions, animations, and artificial intelligence, visitors can travel back in time to explore the Roman desert. The narrative is further enriched by footage and images from recent Greco-Roman excavations in Egypt, carried out in collaboration with the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities.
At the heart of the exhibition, ancient heritage dialogues with modern innovation. Alongside precious artifacts selected from the collections of the Museo Nazionale Romano, significant space is dedicated to the extraordinary recovery operations by the Comando Carabinieri Tutela del Patrimonio Culturale, the true protagonists of the Museo dell’Arte Salvata.
The narrative highlights the desert oases—no longer viewed as isolated fringes of the Empire, but as vibrant hubs for cultural, commercial, and religious exchange, bridging Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Near East.
To dive deeper into the secrets of Roman Egypt, the event features a rich Public Program. During the opening week, from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, the outdoor area in front of the museum will host free talks with internationally renowned archaeologists and scholars.
Supported by a scientific catalog edited by the Tor Vergata University of Rome, the project boasts collaborations with prestigious Italian and international academic institutions, including the University of Milan, the Polytechnic University of Milan, the University of Padua, and the University of Leicester.
