Summer 2026 in Rome will host one of the city’s most anticipated cultural events: the Rome Opera House at Circus Maximus. The summer season of Teatro dell’Opera di Roma will take place at the spectacular Circus Maximus, from June 29 to July 31, 2026.
With a capacity of approximately 6,000 spectators, Circus Maximus will become the heart of Rome’s cultural scene for over a month, offering an extraordinary setting where ancient history meets world-class live performances.
One of the highlights of the 2026 programme is Aida by Giuseppe Verdi, presented in the acclaimed production by Davide Livermore. The grandeur of Circus Maximus enhances the visual and emotional impact of this timeless masterpiece, creating an immersive experience that blends music, technology and Rome’s historic heritage.
The festival opens on June 29 with Alessandro Barbero and his Francesco. Un santo scomodo , a theatrical lecture by based on his bestselling book. Combining historical insight with engaging storytelling, the performance offers a fascinating portrait of Saint Francis.
Dance will also play a leading role throughout the season. On July 14, the internationally renowned Roberto Bolle and Friends returns to Rome, bringing some of the world’s most celebrated dancers to the stage. The programme also features Romeo and Juliet, the iconic ballet choreographed by John Cranko to the music of Sergei Prokofiev, performed by the Rome Opera Ballet Company.
The festival extends beyond traditional opera with a variety of unique cultural events. On July 3 and 4, audiences can enjoy The Gladiator Live in Concert, featuring a full screening of the legendary film directed by Ridley Scott accompanied by a live performance of the soundtrack by the Orchestra and Chorus of the Rome Opera House. Experiencing this event in Rome, the city that inspired the film, makes it even more extraordinary.
The programme also includes performances by renowned Italian and international artists such as Riccardo Cocciante, Edoardo Bennato and Patti Smith.
The festival concludes on July 31, 2026, with a spectacular performance of Carmina Burana by Carl Orff, conducted by Wayne Marshall and enhanced by a video installation created by Anagoor.
