Rome hosts an international art event of major prestige. The Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica continue their extraordinary cultural exchange with the world’s most prominent museums, bringing a legendary masterpiece to the Italian capital. Thanks to a rare loan from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Johannes Vermeer’s famous Woman Reading a Letter is now on display at Palazzo Barberini. This offers an unmissable opportunity for art lovers, as the Dutch master created only a small body of work during his lifetime, with no permanent holdings in Italy.
Painted around 1663–1664, Woman Reading a Letter stands as a pinnacle of 17th-century European art. The painting depicts a young woman immersed in the quiet solitude of her home, absorbed in reading a message and bathed in soft, natural light filtering from a window. In this masterpiece, a simple everyday moment is elevated into an image of deep psychological focus and poetic balance. The letter’s contents remain a mystery, inviting viewers to form their own interpretation.
Curated by Thomas Clement Salomon and Paola Nicita, the exhibition is hosted in the evocative Sala Paesaggi at Palazzo Barberini. The space has been specially designed to allow visitors an intimate, close-up view of the painting. To enrich the experience, a digital multimedia tour offers insights into Vermeer’s refined technique, the artwork’s history, and the vibrant artistic climate of 17th-century Delft.
Johannes Vermeer
Little is known with certainty about the life of Johannes Vermeer (baptized in Delft in 1632). Admitted to the Guild of Saint Luke in 1653, Vermeer became renowned for his scenes of everyday Dutch life, focusing primarily on female figures. His strikingly vivid, realistic style relies on techniques such as pointillé—applying paint in tiny, closely spaced dots—and the likely use of a camera obscura. His masterpieces are celebrated for their luminous depth and pure pigments, notably the precious lapis lazuli ultramarine. Among his most famous works are Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Astronomer.
