Magna Mater – Between Rome and Zama

Magna Mater: Between Rome and Zama, the must-see summer 2025 exhibition at Parco Archeologico del Colosseo.

The exhibition

Magna Mater. Between Rome and Zama Among the most anticipated Rome summer exhibitions in 2025, “Magna Mater: Between Rome and Zama” stands out as an international cultural event hosted in the heart of Parco Archeologico del Colosseo. This unique exhibition bridges mythology, archaeology, and cross-cultural collaboration between Italy and Tunisia, centering on the figure of Magna Mater (the Great Mother), one of the oldest deities of the Mediterranean world.
Known by many names (Cybele, Kybele, Meter Theon), Magna Mater was worshipped for over a thousand years across Anatolia, Greece, Rome and North Africa. The exhibition traces the evolution of this powerful goddess, from her Eastern origins to her official adoption by Rome in 204 BCE during the Second Punic War, when she became a symbol of salvation and eternal renewal for the Roman people.
The immersive exhibition spans six distinct sites within the archaeological park, offering visitors a deep dive into the history and influence of this ancient cult. At the Temple of Romulus, rare artifacts from Zama Regia highlight the spread of Magna Mater worship in Roman North Africa. The Curia Julia expands the narrative to other Roman provinces (from Egypt to Britain) showing the cult’s transformation across the Empire. Meanwhile, the Farnese Aviaries on the Palatine Hill explore the goddess’s Eastern roots and the mystery traditions associated with her.
Inside the Temple of Magna Mater, visitors will discover the deep ties between politics and religion in ancient Rome. At the Nymphaeum of Rain, a multimedia installation brings to life the sounds and symbols of ancient Roman rituals, offering an emotionally rich experience. Finally, at the Museum of the Roman Forum, the exhibition concludes with an elegant selection of artworks that illustrate the artistic and philosophical legacy of Magna Mater from the Renaissance through the 17th century.
If you’re planning what to do in Rome in summer 2025 and are passionate about archaeology, ancient religions, or Roman history, this exhibition is a must-see. “Magna Mater: Between Rome and Zama” is a rare opportunity to explore one of the Eternal City’s most fascinating sacred figures in the equally iconic setting of Parco Archeologico del Coloseo.
