The last Matisse

The last Matisse – Paper morphologies will be on display at the Museo Storico della Fanteria until June 28, 2026, offering one of the most remarkable art exhibitions in Rome in 2026.

The exhibition

Among the must-see exhibitions in Rome, The Last Matisse – Paper Morphologies celebrates the final and most innovative creative period of Henri Matisse, one of the leading figures of 20th-century modern art. Curated by Vittoria Mainoldi, the exhibition runs from February 28 to June 28, 2026 at Museo Storico della Fanteria, and presents an exceptional selection of more than one hundred works on paper.
The exhibition unfolds across four thematic sections, featuring Matisse’s famous papiers découpés (cut-outs), graphic works, illustrated books, and iconic masterpieces such as the renowned Jazz series. It offers a unique opportunity to explore one of the most experimental and influential phases of the artist’s career.
Recognized as one of the most important art events in Rome, the exhibition highlights the moment when Matisse, after revolutionizing painting through Fauvism, developed a new visual language based on paper, color, and form.
From the post-World War II period onward, Matisse explored innovative techniques ranging from drawing and graphic art to stage design and book illustration. During these years, paper became his primary medium, allowing him to experiment freely with composition, line, and color.
Particularly significant are the celebrated cut-outs, created when the artist, working from a wheelchair due to illness, painted sheets of paper with gouache, then cut and assembled them into vibrant compositions. These works, made with simple materials, represent the culmination of his artistic research and remain among the most influential innovations in contemporary art.The Last Matisse – Paper Morphologies is one of the most important cultural events in Rome, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the role of graphic art, publishing, and illustration in 20th-century artistic experimentation. The exhibition provides an immersive journey into Matisse’s creative universe, revealing how he continued to innovate and inspire even in the final years of his life.
