Constantin Brâncuși: the origins of infinity is one of the most important art events in Rome in 2026 at Trajan’s Market, dedicated to one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century. Part of the Romania–Italy Cultural Year 2026, it celebrates the 150th anniversary of Constantin Brâncuși (1876–1957), offering a unique opportunity to explore his revolutionary impact on modern sculpture.
Curated by Erwin Kessler, the exhibition presents an immersive journey into Brâncuși’s artistic vision, highlighting his cultural roots and deep connection to tradition. On one side, the influence of Oltenia, his birthplace, with its rich tradition of wood carving; on the other, the dialogue with ancient Roman sculpture, admired for its balance, harmony and formal perfection.
A key focus of the exhibition is Brâncuși’s use of the taille “directe technique”, carving directly into stone and wood without preliminary models. This approach reflects not only a stylistic choice but also an ethical vision of art, based on a direct and physical relationship with the material. The surfaces of his works retain the marks of the creative gesture, giving sculpture a powerful, almost ritual dimension.
The exhibition path guides visitors through the evolution of Brâncuși’s work, from early figurative and symbolic forms to a more essential and abstract language. By removing unnecessary details, the artist sought the pure essence of form, transforming faces, bodies and fragments into universal symbols. This balance between tradition and modernity defines his innovative artistic language.
Among the highlights of the exhibition are iconic works such as Mademoiselle Pogany and Prometheus, which embody his pursuit of formal purity and harmony between matter and light.
