The exhibition
Among the must-see exhibitions in Rome in 2026 GAM 100. A Century of the Municipal Gallery 1925–2025 stands out as a landmark cultural event celebrating the centenary of Rome’s Gallery of Modern Art.
Founded in 1925 at Palazzo Caffarelli on the Capitoline Hill, the Gallery is now located in Via Francesco Crispi, in the heart of the city, just a short walk from the main museums in central Rome and the city’s most iconic historic squares. An ideal destination for those planning a cultural weekend in Rome, dedicated to art, history and beauty.
The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to admire over 100 selected masterpieces drawn from a permanent collection of more than 3,000 works. Paintings, sculptures, drawings and graphic works trace the development of modern art in Rome from the 19th to the 21st century.
The exhibition route explores the major Italian and European artistic movements, from the late 19th century to the historical avant-gardes, including Futurism, Secession, the Roman School, Italian Novecento, and continuing through Abstraction, Informal Art and the Post-War Neo-Avant-Garde.
Among the artists featured are key figures of 20th-century art such as Giacomo Balla, Carlo Carrà, Mario Sironi, Fortunato Depero, Giorgio de Chirico, Renato Guttuso and Antonietta Raphaël Mafai, whose works shaped the cultural identity of modern Italy.
Beyond its artistic focus, GAM 100 also retraces the institutional history of the Gallery: from its opening in 1925 to its reopening in 1931, from its years at Palazzo Braschi to the move to Palazzo delle Esposizioni, and finally to its current home in Via Crispi, renovated in 2011.
A journey through a century of artistic and cultural transformation that has established the Galleria d’Arte Moderna of Rome as one of the city’s leading references for cultural events and modern art exhibitions in Rome.
