The exhibition
From March 27 to June 29, Palazzo Bonaparte hosts one of the most anticipated cultural events in Rome: the largest exhibition ever held in Italy dedicated to Katsushika Hokusai, the undisputed master of Japanese art and a global icon of visual culture.
A leading figure of the Edo period and a central master of the ukiyo-e tradition, Hokusai captured the essence of the Floating World through evocative and remarkably modern works, portraying a poetic and authentic vision of Japan. As an extraordinary painter and printmaker, he also had a profound influence on Western art, helping shape a visual language that remains universally recognized today.
This major exhibition in Rome, a highlight of the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Japan, features over 200 works on exceptional loan from the National Museum in Krakow. It is the first major international monographic exhibition dedicated to Hokusai outside Poland, making it an unmissable event for art lovers and those interested in Japanese culture.
The exhibition takes visitors on a fascinating journey through Hokusai’s creative universe: from traditional series such as The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō, to iconic masterpieces like The Great Wave off Kanagawa and the Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, as well as his most innovative works, including the famous Manga and finely illustrated decorative albums.
Enhancing the experience is a curated selection of precious Japanese objects (including lacquerware, cloisonné enamels, travel accessories, armor, helmets, swords, and traditional musical instruments) alongside authentic garments such as kimono, haori jackets, and obi sashes. The result is an immersive exhibition that blends art, daily life, and spirituality into a rich and engaging experience.
Promoted by the President of the Culture Commission of the Italian Chamber of Deputies and held under the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Culture, the Embassy of Japan in Italy, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Rome, the Lazio Region, and the City of Rome, the exhibition is curated by Beata Romanowicz in collaboration with the National Museum in Krakow, and produced and organized by Arthemisia.
