The event
This much-anticipated summer cultural event in Rome is the seasonal offering from the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, set against the stunning backdrop of the Baths of Caracalla and, for the first time, the majestic Basilica of Maxentius in the heart of the Roman Forum.
Curated by renowned director Damiano Michieletto and titled Between the Sacred and the Human, the festival presents a diverse calendar of open-air performances in Rome, including opera, sacred music, musicals, ballet, and live concerts. It’s the perfect occasion for those looking to immerse themselves in Rome’s artistic and musical scene during the summer.
The opera lineup features new productions such as Handel’s Resurrection, Verdi’s La Traviata, Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and the iconic musical West Side Story—a celebration of great music under the stars. Dance lovers will also be thrilled by the return of the Roberto Bolle and Friends gala, and the powerful triple bill Bausch – Béjart – Wheeldon, performed by the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma Ballet Company under the direction of Eleonora Abbagnato.
Organized in collaboration with the Special Superintendence of Rome and the Colosseum Archaeological Park, the Caracalla Festival 2025 stands out as one of the top summer events in Rome, combining art, history, and live performance in one of the city’s most evocative settings. The grand finale on August 7 features a moving rendition of Carmina Burana by Carl Orff.
If you’re planning a summer stay in the Eternal City, don’t miss this unique opportunity to enjoy a truly unforgettable cultural experience in Rome.
