Experience an extraordinary visual journey through the heart of ancient Rome: the monumental Baths of Caracalla are hosting an unmissable retrospective dedicated to Frank Horvat, open through January 10th, 2027. This captivating exhibition features 72 iconic photographs set seamlessly within the majestic ruins of one of the world’s most impressive, best-preserved ancient thermal complexes.
Born in Abbazia in 1922 and living across Europe’s top cultural capitals—including Paris, London, Milan, and Lugano—Horvat redefined the traditional boundaries of visual storytelling. Best known for revolutionizing fashion photography during the 1950s and 1960s in prestigious international magazines like Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, his eclectic 70-year career also spanned street photojournalism for the Magnum agency, intimate portraiture, landscape photography, and innovative digital experimentation.
The journey is divided in three parts:
- The Female Universe & 1960s Rome: Set inside one of the ancient palaestras (gymnasiums), this section showcases powerful portraits of women—ranging from high-fashion models captured candidly on city streets to everyday women documented during his travels across India, Brazil, Japan, and Egypt. A featured highlight includes his famous early 1960s Rome photoshoots, where haute couture meets Italian cinema and literary icons like Marcello Mastroianni and Alberto Moravia.
- True Likenesses: A refined dialogue between photography and classical art, where Horvat’s lens challenges the techniques of history’s master painters, paying homage to timeless human beauty.
- Goethe in Sicily: A striking collection of 1980s landscape photography retracing Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s famous Italian Journey, exploring Greek ruins, untouched Mediterranean nature, and rich island traditions through a romantic lens.
