Outdoor movie theater – Il cinema in piazza

From June 1st to July 13th, the event that brings the big screen under Rome’s starlit sky is back: Il Cinema in Piazza.

The Initiative

Conceived and organized by the young members of Piccolo America, Il Cinema in Piazza is much more than just a film screening series. It’s a cultural initiative that, each summer, transforms public squares and parks into open-air cinemas—places of gathering, reflection, and beauty. Now a beloved tradition in the capital, the event has grown year after year, drawing thousands of spectators every evening. Screenings take place in three iconic locations: Piazza San Cosimato in the heart of Trastevere, Parco della Cervelletta in the Aniene Valley, and Monte Ciocci in the Balduina district. These sites are chosen not only for their atmospheric urban charm, but also for their symbolic value—cinema becomes a catalyst for urban renewal.
The programming is rich and diverse: from restored classics to auteur cinema, family-friendly films, and original-language screenings with subtitles. Many evenings are also enriched by talks and Q&A sessions with directors, actors, and film critics.

The Program

Evening screenings begin at 9:15 PM across the three locations, with a total of 94 free screenings, including 35 special events and 7 screenings at Cinema Troisi, a recently restored art-house cinema. Films are often presented in their original language with subtitles.
The lineup is eclectic and multigenerational: from legendary classics to contemporary indie productions, from auteur masterpieces to animations for children. Dedicated retrospectives will honor major filmmakers such as Rossellini, Carpenter, Chaplin, Keaton, Franca Valeri, Claire Denis, and Park Chan-wook.
There is also space for new forms of expression, with a focus on stop-motion animation, independent cinema, and emerging young directors—making Il Cinema in Piazza a truly inclusive celebration of film in all its forms.
