Impressionism and beyond. Masterpieces from the Detroit Institute of Arts

A major Impressionism exhibition in Rome arrives at Ara Pacis Museum, showcasing iconic masterpieces from the Detroit Institute of Arts.

The exhibition

Impressionism will be the protagonist of the exhibition at Ara Pacis Museum in Rome until May 3, 2026. The event brings to the Eternal City a remarkable selection of 52 masterpieces by leading artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, all from the prestigious Detroit Institute of Arts, one of the most important art museums in the United States and a global reference point for the collection of European avant-garde works. Promoted by Roma Capitale, the Department of Culture, and the Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali (and curated by Ilaria Miarelli Mariani and Claudio Zambianchi) the exhibition guides visitors through the fascinating evolution of modern painting. The journey begins with the birth of the Impressionist revolution, a movement that broke away from academic conventions to explore new ways of depicting light, nature, and everyday life. The exhibition then moves forward to the avant-garde movements of the early 20th century and to German Expressionism in the interwar period. The collection features works by artists who shaped the history of European art: Courbet, Renoir, Degas, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, Modigliani, Kandinsky, Beckmann and many others who defined the transition to modernity. Their paintings highlight an era of extraordinary artistic innovation, where light and color, reality and abstraction, nature and the city became the driving forces behind bold experimentation. Among the exhibition’s standout pieces (many of which are rarely displayed outside the United States) are Woman in an Armchair (1874) by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Bathers (1879–1880) by Paul Cézanne, both exemplary studies of the human figure, light, and the construction of pictorial space. This exceptional art event in Rome offers a unique opportunity for anyone wishing to enjoy high-level cultural experiences during their stay in the city. It is the perfect addition to a hotel visit, allowing guests to discover Rome through its vibrant art scene, world-class museums, and the major exhibitions that enrich the capital year-round.
