The exhibition
From June 28 to September 21, 2025, Rome will host one of the most anticipated photography exhibitions of summer: Elliott Erwitt. Icons arrives at Palazzo Bonaparte, in the heart of the Eternal City, to celebrate the art and unique perspective of one of the greatest masters of 20th-century photography.
The exhibition retraces the celebrated American photographer’s career through over 80 images that have shaped the history of photography and contemporary visual culture. With his ironic, empathetic and deeply human style, Erwitt captured some of the most meaningful moments of the last century, turning everyday scenes into timeless visual icons.
Among the portraits on display are legendary figures such as Marilyn Monroe, Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Sophia Loren and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Historic moments are also featured, including the funeral of John F. Kennedy and the famous debate between Nixon and Khrushchev, along with beloved romantic shots like the California Kiss and Erwitt’s humorous self-portraits.
Renowned for his long-standing collaboration with the iconic Magnum Photos agency, Erwitt left an indelible mark on the world of photography. His storytelling, at times surreal, often irreverent, but always rich in humanity, makes him a universally admired artist, able to move and inspire with every shot.
A special section of the exhibition is dedicated to Erwitt’s more playful work: his iconic dog photographs. Captured from a low angle with the same curious and free gaze that fascinated the artist, these animals take center stage in scenes that are both amusing and poetic, perfectly reflecting Erwitt’s talent for finding meaning in life’s smallest details.
This is a must-see event for anyone looking for an unforgettable exhibition in Rome in summer 2025, a journey through fine art photography filled with irony, emotion and history.
