The exhibition
Once again, Palazzo Esposizioni Roma hosts one of the most anticipated exhibitions for lovers of documentary photography and visual journalism: the latest edition of World Press Photo Exhibition, the prestigious international contest that, since 1955, has celebrated the work of the world’s most outstanding professional photographers.
The exhibition showcases the winning entries selected from over 60,000 shots submitted by nearly 4,000 photographers from 141 countries. A total of 42 photographic projects are on display, divided into three main categories: single images, photo stories, and long-term projects. These powerful visual narratives represent the best of contemporary photography and come from six global regions: Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, North and Central America, South America, and South, Central and Western Asia.
The selected works provide a raw and moving look into some of the most urgent global issues of our time, including migration, armed conflict and the climate crisis. The “Photo of the Year” was awarded to Palestinian photographer Samar Abu Elouf for an image taken for The New York Times: a deeply emotional portrait of Mahmoud Ajjour, a 9-year-old boy severely injured during an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City in March 2024.
Two other powerful stories completed the top three: “Night Crossing” by American photographer John Moore, capturing the dramatic journey of migrants in the U.S.–Mexico border, and “Droughts in the Amazon” by Musuk Nolte, which documents the harsh effects of drought on a community in the Brazilian Amazon, featuring a young boy walking across the dry riverbed of the Solimões River to reach his mother’s village.
