The exhibition
Among the most fascinating exhibitions to see in Rome, Greece in Rome, hosted at tMusei Capitolini– Villa Caffarelli, offers a high-level cultural experience for art and history lovers. Curated by Eugenio La Rocca and Claudio Parisi Presicce, the exhibition brings together more than 150 original Greek works, providing extraordinary insight into the profound influence of Greek civilization on the artistic and cultural development of ancient Rome. The exhibition path tells the story of the encounter between two civilizations that shaped Western culture: Greece and Rome. Through sculptures, reliefs, archaeological finds, and original artifacts—some displayed to the public for the first time—the exhibition guides visitors from the origins of Rome to the Imperial age, highlighting the central role of Greek art in shaping Roman identity. Inizialmente giunta a Roma attraverso scambi commerciali e l’importazione di oggetti di lusso, l’arte greca si diffuse poi in modo capillare grazie alle conquiste romane nel Mediterraneo orientale. Statue in marmo e bronzo, argenti finemente lavorati, pitture e arredi preziosi trasformarono piazze, edifici pubblici, giardini e residenze private, ridefinendo i canoni estetici e diventando simbolo di prestigio, potere e raffinatezza. Among the most remarkable works on display are the great Capitoline bronzes, exceptionally reunited for this exhibition, along with masterpieces such as the stele from the Abbey of Grottaferrata and the famous Niobid sculptures from the Horti Sallustiani, brought together again after centuries of dispersion. Of great symbolic importance is also the return to Rome of a female acroterial sculpture once part of the Renaissance collection of Cardinal Alessandro Peretti Montalto. The exhibition also features newly discovered artifacts, including Attic ceramics found during archaeological excavations near the Colosseum, shown to the public for the first time.
The visit is enhanced by immersive multimedia installations and video projections, making the experience engaging and accessible to all visitors. The exhibition is made possible through collaborations with major international institutions, including the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Vatican Museums, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, as well as leading Italian museums.
