The exhibition
Rome welcomes one of the season’s most captivating photography shows: Chromotherapia. Feel-good color photography , on view at the French Academy at Villa Medici until June 9.
Curated by Maurizio Cattelan and Sam Stourdzé, the exhibition offers a unique look at the evolution of color photography throughout the 20th century, told through the eyes of 20 international artists and organized into 7 thematic sections that explore the visual and narrative power of color.
Visitors are guided through a vibrant world of intense hues — from lemon yellow to deep blue, vivid reds and bright oranges — as they discover the transformation of color photography from its scientific roots to its recognition as a powerful artistic language.
While color experimentation in photography began in the late 19th century, it was the invention of the autochrome process by the Lumière brothers in 1907 that truly launched the era of color. Over the next hundred years, color became a space for artistic freedom and expression, often in contrast to the restraint of black-and-white imagery.
Among the featured artists are William Wegman, known for his iconic dog portraits; Walter Chandoha, dubbed “The Cat Photographer”, with his saturated feline compositions; Ouka Leele, who captured the spirit of bodily liberation during Spain’s Movida movement; Juno Calypso, who reimagines the visual language of cinema and advertising; and Martin Parr, who humorously turns his lens on trays of fast food to critique the overindulgence of modern life.
The exhibition’s final note is the acclaimed art magazine Toiletpaper, created by Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari — a vivid homage to the playful, surreal, and baroque legacy of color photography pioneers.
