Exhibition

The exhibition Ukiyoe. The Floating World. Visions from Japan will be at Museo Di Roma. until 23 June 2024. The exhibition presents 150 Japanese masterpieces from the Edo era, dating back to the years between the 17th and 19th centuries. The theme is the Ukiyoe, a particularly innovative artistic movement of those years, capable of exerting great influence on an international level still today.

Literally translatable as “images of the floating world”, Ukiyoe is a pictorial genre born in the Edo era (1603-1868). It involves the use of hanging scrolls or unrolled in the hands, as well as large screens and brush paintings on silk or paper. Imported from China, this technique increased the diffusion of books and images, thanks also to the talent of the masters. In fact, publishers often financially supported these types of projects, choosing the artists directly and then launching the works on the market. The novelty of Ukiyoe was the completely different subjects compared to those of aristocratic wall painting. The rising urban class dictated the tastes of the Edo era, in particular the wealthy merchants who began to afford luxuries and entertainment.

Ukiyoe symbolized the enjoyment of everything that was fashionable, becoming testimony to the Japanese society of the time, with its habits and customs. Alongside the paintings, it is possible to admire objects from the period, such as musical instruments, board games, overkimonos and male and female trousseau accessories.
