Until the 2nd of January 2023, the “Moon over the Colosseum” event by Parco Archeologico del Colosseo returns with a new path. An evening guided tour to discover the history and secrets of the Flavian Amphitheater.
Also this year Parco Archeologico del Colosseo is organizing the event The Moon over the Colosseum, until the 2nd of January 2023. The new exhibition itinerary tells the story of the monument in the period of Ancient Rome, but also the Christian one starting from the 17th century painting of Jerusalem.
The visitor will be able to discover the secret heart of the Flavian Amphitheater, through corridors, galleries and underground passages that were a real backstage. Here, the props and animals in cages were found before entering the scene for venationes (hunting simulations) and munera (games between gladiators).
New for 2022 is the video installation of the 17th century wall painting of the City of Jerusalem on the Triumphal Gate. The work shows tales from the Old and New Testaments, recalling the importance that the Colosseum after the end of the Roman Empire, especially since it became the site of Via Crucis in 1750.
Then, the visit evokes the traditional ceremony that passes in front of one of the aedicules and the cross along the perimeter. It ends with a panoramic look at the structure of the underground and the stands, capable of accommodating more than 60,000 spectators.
