Hilde in Italy

Until May 4, 2024, the Museo di Roma in Trastevere hosts the photographic exhibition Hilde in Italy dedicated to the works of Hilde Lotz-Bauer, pioneer of street photography.

The exhibition

Hilde in Italy photo exhibition will be at Museo di Roma in Trastevere until May 4, 2024. Pioneer of street photography, after training as a photographer at the Munich school and a doctorate in art history, in 1934 Hilde Lotz-Bauer arrived in Rome thanks to a travel grant from the Bibliotheca Hertziana. She began as a photographer of Bernhard Degenhart’s drawings and subsequently dedicated herself to the study of art historians, traveling throughout Italy, of which she managed to represent the essence during the twenty years of Fascism.

The exhibition recounts the photographer’s work between 1934 and 1943, the decade of her first stay in Italy. hots were taken with her Leica, which captures the places, everyday life and festive occasions of ordinary people. The images are characterized by great realism of which the women portrayed in the Scanno series are a clear example. Here the female protagonists are immortalized with their traditional handmade clothes, which seem like real living works. Hilde in fact paid particular attention to the aesthetic composition and details. In this way the reports became an original artistic work, capable of documenting the social context.

Promoted by Roma Capitale, the exhibition is curated by Federica Kappler and Corinna Lotz, the artist’s daughter.
