Until the 3rd of May 2020, the Ara Pacis Museum hosts the exhibition “Once upon a time Sergio Leone”, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of his death.

The exhibition

Rome celebrates one of the greatest Italian directors with the exhibition “Once upon a time Sergio Leone”, at the Ara Pacis Museum until the 3rd of May 2020, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of his death.

The exhibition itinerary tells the artistic story of Sergio Leone, marked since birth: in fact, his father was a director in the golden age of the Italian silent film.

During his career, Sergio Leone crosses the peplum (a genre of Italian-made historical or Biblical epics), rewrites the western genre and reaches his peak thanks to the most important project of his life, “Once Upon a Time in America”. This masterpiece should have been followed by another film of great proportions dedicated to the battle of Leningrad, of which, however, only a few pages were written before his death. The director was not particularly fond of writing and preferred to tell the vision of his films to friends, scriptwriters and producers.

However, his creative legacy is immense: his movies are considered a sort of “Bible”, on which those who study cinema learn the language of cinema, while many contemporary directors, such as Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood and Quentin Tarantino, recognize their artistic debt to him.

The love for the classics of the past is tangible in the works by the director, revealing a taste for architecture and figurative art that can be found in the construction of the sets and framings.

Thanks to the archive materials of the Leone family, visitors will have the opportunity to see the studio of the director, admiring his memorabilia, his library, and then immerse himself in his films through models, sets, sketches, costumes, photos and objects from scene.
