Until the 5th of February 2023 the exhibition “Medieval Rome. The lost face of the city” will be at the Museo di Roma in Palazzo Braschi. A journey to discover an unprecedented city, hidden behind the squares, churches and Renaissance palaces: a lost Rome between the 6th and14th centuries, during the Middle Ages.
The exhibition is divided into 9 sections and features over 160 works, including mosaics and frescoes from public collections, places of worship and major museum institutions such as the Vatican Museums.
The visit begins with the most iconic places of the medieval era, including palaces and basilicas, also focusing on the environmental context, now totally changed. An example is the Tiber, whose bridges and bridges were the center of many urban activities. The discovery of Rome in the Middle Ages continues with the commissions of popes and cardinals, the shops of artists and artisans, the city considered a pilgrimage destination by kings and emperors. Finally, the rich didactic equipment contributed to the central role that the capital had in Christian and medieval Europe.
The exhibition is promoted by Roma Culture, the Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali, in collaboration with Sapienza University of Rome.
