Until the 29th of June 2021, the new exhibition space of the Capitoline Museums, Villa Caffarelli in Campidoglio, will host “The Torlonia marbles. Collecting masterpieces”.
92 of the 620 masterpieces of classical statuary belonging to the Torlonia Collection, considered the most prestigious private collection of ancient sculptures in the world. Until the 29th of June 2021 the exhibition “The Torlonia marbles. Collecting Masterpieces” will be at Villa Caffarelli in Campidoglio, the new exhibition space of the Capitoline Museums.
The exhibition seems like a narration that tells the history of collecting ancient Roman and Greek marbles.
The path, divided into five sections, begins with the evocation of the Torlonia Museum, founded by Prince Alessandro Torlonia who had gathered the family collections. For this reason, the Pompeian red walls of the room recall those of the museum of the late 19th century. The next section includes the sculptures found in the 19th century-excavations, while in the third we can admire the masterpieces of the 1700s from Villa Albani and Studio Cavaceppi. It then continues with the 17th century collection of Palazzo Giustiniani (fourth section) to end with the objects belonging to the collections from 1400 until today.
The exhibition is the result of an agreement between the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism and the Torlonia Foundation, which has restored the selected sculptures with the contribution of the maison Bulgari, main sponsor of this exhibition.
