From September 15 to November 22 the exhibition “Giovanni Gastel. The People I like” will be at Spazio Extra MAXXI. A gallery with over 200 portraits representing personalities from the world of entertainment, culture, fashion, music and politics.
Over 200 portraits collected for the exhibition Giovanni Gastel. The people I like, curated by Uberto Frigerio, premiered in the Spazio Extra MAXXI from September 15 to November 22.
A set of faces of personalities from the world of culture, entertainment, fashion, music and politics met by the great photographer during his forty-year career. With this exhibition Gastel intends to tell his world, made unique by the people he met and who were able to transmit something.
In fact, portraits are not perceived as mere representations of the human physiognomy: the artist’s aim is to investigate what goes beyond the exterior by catching the soul of the character, in order to know the psychological sphere.
This feeling is shown in the staging, in the scenography and in the arrangement of the images on display. In the central area of the space, the faces of famous artists chase each other in a sort of 125meter-labyrinth. Movable walls arranged diagonally that look at each other and seem to dialogue with each other: random paths that invite the viewer to orient themselves according to their instincts.
Great importance has been given to poems and texts dear to the photographer, linked to his emotional sphere.
