Centrale Montemartini presents the exhibition “Colors of the Romans. Mosaics from the Capitoline Collections”, until the 15th of January 2023. A vast selection of Roman mosaics, alongside frescoes and sculptures from Ancient Rome.
The exhibition “Colors of the Romans. Mosaics from the Capitoline Collections” will be at Centrale Montemartini until the 15th of January 2023. it is a great opportunity to discover the history of Ancient Rome through the Roman mosaics, frescoes and sculptures that furnished the buildings of the Romans between the 1st century BC. and the 4th century AD.
The expositive path is divided into 4 thematic sections, which follow a chronological order.
The first section is dedicated to the art of mosaics in Rome and its history: the works on display testify to the great technical and artistic ability of the Romans.
Roman luxury residences between the end of the Republican age and the late ancient age is the theme of the second section. It is a chronological narration that starts from the oldest buildings and arrives at the most recent ones, which belong to the 4th century AD.
The third section is connected to the sacred spaces, in particular to the Hilarian basilica, seat of the college of priests dedicated to the cult of Cybele and Attis. The first archaeological remains of the building date back to 1889 and among them, two of the Roman mosaics found are exhibited in this section.
Finally, the concluding section describes the mosaic inside the funeral buildings in the suburban areas of ancient Rome. All the roman patterns were made with the aim of enhancing the qualities of the deceased, recalling the moral values of the Roman society.
