From the 25th of October 2022 to the 29th of January 2023 the Galleria Borghese hosts the exhibition dedicated to the birth of painting on stone in Rome
Until the 29th of January 2023 the exhibition Timeless wonders. Painting on stone in Rome between the 16th and the 17th centuries will be hosted at Galleria Borghese.
An exhibition dedicated to the invention of painting on stone, a technique developed by Sebastiano del Piombo after the Sack of Rome. More than 60 belonging to private collections and Italian and international museums are exhibited.
The itinerary is divided into eight sections that tell the story of this technique through different themes, such as eternity attributed to works of art, the comparison between sculpture and painting, the passage of older materials from mines to workshops, up to to the magnificent collections of villas and palaces.
In addition to numerous paintings, it is possible to admire objects with colored stones belonging to the Roman aristocratic families, such as small altars, clocks and cabinets. The main feature lies in the particularly complex shapes and in the ornaments with sculptures and reliefs. Moreover, works from the Borghese collection are also exhibited, including the Roman semiprecious stone table and the Tabernacle in the Chapel. Finally, to enrich the path statues with polychrome inserts of the Gallery, placed in comparison with the ancient colored marbles.
